Multicultural Day and Family Fun Fest
This event sponsored by the agency takes place each year in the month of August. The purpose of this one day event is to gather DLA Land and Maritime associates and their families to appreciate and celebrate the agency's diversity. As signed by the Commander in 2004, "The Defense Federal Community has the opportunity to offer a day for families to learn about different cultures and share time to relax and have fun together..."
The DLA Land and Maritime Asian Pacific American Program (APA) is a Special Emphasis Program (SEP) under the direction of the Equal Employment Opportunity Office (EEO). The event began in 2000 and the APA committee strives to create the most dynamic booth that will allow us to share, educate, and raise awareness of our Asian heritage each year.
National Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (May)
In 1978, a joint congressional resolution was signed by President Jimmy Carter marking the first 10 days of May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Week. This time frame was chosen to coincide with two key anniversaries in Asian Pacific American history; the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in United States (May 7, 1843) and the completion of the transcontinental railroad (May 10, 1869). In 1990 the entire month of May was designated Asian Pacific American Heritage Month by President H. W. Bush. Each year a theme is selected to celebrate and honor the many contributions that Asian Pacific Americans have made and the part they have played in the history of America.
