National Hispanic Heritage Month (15 September - 15 October)
In 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed a week in September as National Hispanic Heritage Week. The week was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the independence of five Central American countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua) and Mexico's Independence Day. In 1988, the week was expanded to a month long celebration to include El Dia de la Raza on October 12. During this month, we honor the culture, traditions, heritage and contributions of Hispanic Americans. Each year a theme is selected to reflect our heritage and promotional materials are prepared to share a piece of history with DSCC associates.
